I think some norms our group should follow is:

-Be on task -Work continuously -Pitch ideas to help

-Discuss it with everyone -Work as a group -Put everyones ideas to form one big idea

With these norms it will help the project get done efficiently, quickly and done right.

What makes a good trailer?

In a good trailer it should be almost dramatic, you want it to catch the audiences attention. Also in a trailer you don’t give away the ending of the story, instead give quotes from the book, or a brief cover of the story of someone telling the story.

Discussing rules in our school and The Givers rules

I think some rules are a good thing, while some are just pointless. Some rules help make things easier for life to work, but some/most are annoying. The no cell phone policy doesn’t work. The only reason why some teachers no cell phone policy works is because the students don’t want to get caught by that teacher.

The Givers Society Rules:

- Ribbons must be neatly worn -No taking home food -Can’t cross river -Finish Volunteer hours

-Listen to the speaker -Don’t be late for lessons -Don’t point out differences -Use precise language

-Must apologize -Can’t learn childs name before hand – No lying -Can’t look at each other nude

-Can’t ride a bike before age of nine -Must report stirrings -Can’t brag -Take stirring pills

-Be respectful -Be respectful to elders

For the community to run smoothly it must take common sense to run. They must take stirring pills if they wish to keep only birth mothers to have kids. Also listening and being respectful is needed. Using precise language is a good rule. But ome rules they could get rid of are; -Can’t ride a bike before age of nine -Must report stirrings

-No taking home food. But those are only a few of the societies rules not all that could be changed or are listed. In this community it is very hard to change rules, for it takes the elder committees time when it does not need to be wasted on changing rules.

A controversial topic.

In the book The Giver, they are controlled and not allowed many choices in their society. I think they should be able to have choices that they can make on their own. In our society you can make many choices and as many as you basically want, however some communities in our society are still faced with not being able to make those choices, and are more like the people in the community in The Giver.

Lois Lowry

Lois Lowry grew up in Maine, so did her kids. She currently has four kids, she married young at the age of 19 to a Naval officer. However their marriage ended at her age of 40. Lois went to college at the University of Southern Maine, got her degree, went to graduate school, and then began to write professionally. She always loved to write books. This is a page with more precise details on her life. She has many books, this is a link to the list of all her books. We are reading about her book the giver, if you look under awards in this section it tells how well her book did.

How how should schooling breaks/holidays work?

This is a link that shows the current outline for Alberta’s schooling break system; http://education.alberta.ca/apps/syos/ScheduleSummary.asp. If we stuck with the way we currently are running our school breaks I think that it would be better because then we have more time off in the summer. This link is saying that our breaks will continue to stay the same with a few changes. The con to this system is that there are not as many “longer” breaks, and school days will seem to stretch out for longer times. This calender shows the may long weekend that is all over alberta at the same time.

If we switched to a break system of which it had more longer breaks throughout the year it would leave less time for summer break. Many people like the longer summer. The downside to this idea is that many people prefer the one long break compared to all longer spread out within the school year. This link tells about how short summer breaks lead to higher grades, but they have more breaks in the year. Although the upside is that this holiday/break system would create more spacing between school days. This way it doesn’t make school seem like it drags on as much. However Obama wants to push longer school days and less vacations. If we had a longer may long it would be a week long not a 5 day weekend.

For my opinion I believe that we should keep it the way it currently is, on this schedule. I like that it is the longest break during summer, because its the nicest outside then. However other people don’t like this idea, instead they would rather cut summer break. The cons to keeping this current idea is that we have longer, continuous days of school without breaks. But we still do get breaks at different times of the year, they just aren’t as long such as may long.

Meeting a poet

After our class met with Dan over Skype, I learned that its not possible to only be a poet, but with the help of grants you can still be one. As for writing poetry, I think it mostly comes from your own experiences, and what you like to write about. My four highlights were:

->Getting him to read us a poem

->Finding out how he got his ideas for his poems

->How he first started writing poems

->Also how he thinks that its your own choice of how you like to write.

Dans poetry is unique, because he writes his poem from letters from a story or perhaps another poem.

Have you ever seen something like this?

Not really, I think that its so unique that you only see people making slight differences to this new type of poetry.

For my video reflection they told me to slow down my pictures because they are a bit fast in the ending. I didn’t change it because then i would have to redo my voice over, which i don’t want to do.
